Color Dot/Star Itinerant and Low Power Frequencies
NOTE: All frequencies listed on this page require FCC licensing when used in the United States, except when using FCC Part 95 certified radios on MURS and FRS frequencies.
Many decades ago radio manufacturers adopted a color coding scheme so that radio users could easily identify which frequencies their equipment operated on.
Sometimes referred to as "bubble pack business band" frequencies, these are typically used by low power hand held business radios. Users might include construction site operations, schools, events, fast food drive-thru intercoms, and other miscellaneous business uses.
Many national or regional retail store chains (and many other businesses) have licenses for nationwide use of 2 watt hand held radios on the "star" frequencies (467.8500, 467.8750, 467.9000, 467.9250).
Three FRS/GMRS frequencies below are listed as "color dots". This is because in the past, businesses and other organizations could obtain GMRS licenses and some radios were sold with color coded GMRS channels for business use. Under current FCC rules, businesses are generally not eligible to hold a GMRS license. In 2017, the FCC rules were changed and FRS frequencies were combined with GMRS. Businesses can operate lower power/lower bandwidth FRS radios on frequencies shared with GMRS.
Some of the frequencies in the tables and lists below are restricted to itinerant use and some have different transmit power restrictions. There are other frequencies in the 450-470 MHz band that are restricted to low power operations in certain areas. See the links below the table and at the bottom of this page for detailed information.

Notes
- (1) Maximum power 1 Watt.
- (2) Maximum power 2 Watts.
- (3) Maximum power 35 Watts.
- (4) Itinerant frequency before 800 MHz rebanding. Some legacy licensees remain. Presently allocated to Public Safety.
- (5) Itinerant use only.
- Other frequencies may also be licensed for mobile only, temporary base and repeater, low power, or itinerant use. Refer to:
- 47CFR90.35 Industrial/Business Pool Frequency Table. The numbers in the Limitations column refer to the notes in section (c) below the table.
- 47CFR90.267 Assignment and use of frequencies in the 450-470 MHz band for low power use.
- Modes and emission designators used depend on the bandwidth allowed on a particular frequency. Refer to the FCC rules linked above. FM, FMN and various digital modes such as DMR, NXDN, or P25 may be used.
Motorola Preset Frequencies
Some Motorola handheld business radios have factory preset channels. A few models are listed below. Complete frequency and tone information for some models can be found in the user's manuals available on Motorola's website.
Some of the manuals appear to contain duplicate channels and other typographical errors. If you can correct the errors, please do so.
The typographical errors for the VHF entries have been fixed. It appears Motorola is still shipping some radios with these errors printed in their user manuals, however.
Motorola RDX series and XTN series (VHF versions) list channel 19 as 152.700 MHz, it is actually 152.900 MHz. Channel 25 is listed as 154.655 MHz; it is actually 154.5475 MHz.
The Motorola RMV2050 VHF radio uses the same 27 VHF business frequency programming plan as the Motorola RDX series VHF radios.

Radio Rental Companies
Many radio rental companies have permanent licenses that allow temporary fixed, portable and mobile operations anywhere in the USA or in large multi-state areas of the USA.
Radio rental companies sometimes obtain an STA (Special Temporary Authority) (temporary license) for their customers' short term events. These can include simplex channels, temporary repeaters or temporary trunked systems.
For many events, frequencies that are not in use in the particular area where the event will occur are obtained from a frequency coordinator well in advance. Almost any Business/Industrial Pool frequency can be used.
Some of the radio rental companies that have licenses for nationwide operation are listed below. This is not a complete list.
